‘She’s not afraid to speak her mind,’ the ‘Voice’ judge says of his country-superstar wife.
NEW YORK — Among the celebrities who have spoken out against Chris Brown over the past few weeks, Miranda Lambert became the driving force behind the criticism of the R&B singer’s recent Grammy win and performances.
After Brown took the Grammy stage February 12, Lambert shared her disappointment on Twitter that Brown had been handed an award and performed twice, just three years after he assaulted then-girlfriend Rihanna the night before the 2009 Grammys.
The country superstar’s comments last month certainly didn’t surprise her husband, fellow country singer and “The Voice” judge Blake Shelton, who spoke to MTV News about his wife’s remarks.
“Miranda’s always [outspoken]. If there’s anybody that should be getting a fun, fearless award it’s Miranda,” he told MTV News at Cosmopolitan‘s Fun Fearless Awards, where he was being honored. “She’s not afraid to speak her mind.”
Brown responded to Lambert’s complaints on Twitter, writing, “Using my name to get publicity? I love it! Perform your heart out! Go buy Miranda Lambert album! So motivational and ‘PERFECT’!”
But that didn’t stop Lambert: She later talked about Brown onstage during one of her concerts in February, telling her fans, “I just have to speak my mind, because where I come from, beating up on a woman is never OK. So that’s why my daddy taught me early on in life how to use a shotgun.”
While Lambert’s outspokenness didn’t surprise Shelton, he was surprised that his wife’s anti-Brown comments stopped — for now, at least. “She’s like me in that we’re not politicians; we’re not trying to run for office,” he said. “We’re just singers. We have opinions, and clearly a lot of Miranda’s music is about domestic abuse and it doesn’t surprise me she spoke about Chris Brown,” he said. “I’m surprised she stopped talking about it.”
