Global 100: Strong dollar helps US leaders set the pace as City firms face fierce competition
From legalweek.com

Rising profits at expansive US law firms and continued weakness in sterling look set to sustain competitive pressure on globally ambitious UK firms for years to come, according to new research. This year’s Global 100 – a joint initiative from The American Lawyer and Legal Week – shows leading US players gaining a stronger grip on the upper echelons of the profession globally, based on both profitability and fee income. The three largest law firms in revenue terms are either US-based or the result of unions structured through vereins – with Baker & McKenzie, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom and DLA Piper topping the income rankings.
Despite early talk, singer did not appear in any of episode’s skits.
Marking her third appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” Rihanna proved that the third time’s a charm when the pop titan took over the Studio 8H stage on Saturday for a pair of eye-popping performance sets during the Eli Manning-hosted episode.
Standing before an oversized crystallized spider web in the middle of the black-lit stage, Rihanna began her first number with the buzzing sounds of “Birthday Cake.” It was a surprising song selection that momentarily suggested the possibility of an onstage reunion with birthday boy Chris Brown, but “Cake” ended quickly, instead leading into a medley of her tune “Talk That Talk.”
” ‘SNL,’ put your hands together like this,” she told the crowd.
With her backup dancers on hand, Rih kept the performance straightforward, offering viewers some simple shakes, pelvis thrusts and plenty of swag. One complaint was with the echo effect that was added to her microphone, which made the singer’s vocal sound shaky at times.
However, any issues with the opening number were soon forgotten when the pop star took to the stage for her follow-up performance of her brand-new single, “Where Have You Been.” Fronting an Arabian-themed backdrop and human props, Rihanna threw on a fierce game face and danced her way through the track with steady energy. It was a welcome change to see the Barbadian singer show off some footwork.
Unfortunately, the episode ended without any mention of “Shy Ronnie,” her first digital short, or any Rihanna-featured skits at all, even though “SNL” head honcho Lorne Michaels had told reporters on Wednesday that he was trying to work out the details on incorporating Rihanna into the sketch lineup.
Shy Ronnie may have not made an appearance, but Saturday’s gig was the perfect vehicle to promote her just-released single as well as her big-screen acting debut in the summer flick “Battleship,” which hits theaters May 18.

Rihanna ‘Intimidated’ By ‘Battleship’ Role
From www.mtv
‘I was walking into this as a complete amateur,’ singer reveals in ‘MTV First: Battleship.’
As Rihanna begins her foray into the film industry, she’s quickly becoming the queen of pop culture. She’s a musical icon with millions of fans who worship her singing abilities and can’t wait to see her acting debut in Peter Berg’s “Battleship.” But her devotees aren’t the only ones itching to see what the musician has up her sleeve. During “MTV First: Battleship,” her co-star Taylor Kitsch said he was excited to see her take on the role.
“Yeah, there’s an excitement behind [working with Rihanna]. I was excited to see what you were going to do with [the part],” Kitsch said to the singer.
Rihanna chimed in, “I’ll answer this, because it’s probably uncomfortable for them to say no, but I was the one that was intimidated.”
Wait, what? It’s hard to imagine the singer intimidated by anything. With songs like “Rockstar 101″ and “Who’s That Chick?” and equally fiery music videos, Rihanna gives off a fierce persona and owns any project that comes her way. But she revealed that despite her ever-present nerves, she learned from the cast — particularly Kitsch, who offered advice as they worked on scenes.
“You know, we have a mutual respect for each other’s industry,” she said. “I was walking into this as an amateur — a complete amateur. I didn’t know anything and I had a good team to learn from. I watched them, and especially Taylor, ’cause we did a lot of scenes together and he would always offer me advice.”
And as for Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker and Kitsch having nerves around the successful chart-topper, Rihanna waves it off.
“There was nothing for them to be intimidated about. I was the wreck. I was a wreck, just like, scared to sh–,” she said. “Especially when Liam Neeson showed up to set.”
Let’s see, Neeson has voiced an all-powerful lion for “Narnia,” played Jean Valjean in “Les Misérables,” was a Jedi Master in the “Star Wars” prequels and kicked some serious ass as he raced around Europe to save his daughter from sex trafficking in “Taken.” Why would she ever be intimidated?
“He was intimidated by me,” Rihanna joked.

Duo attempts to take down the alien invaders in this action-packed look at the Hasbro film.
Did you see it? Did you catch it in all its epic glory? As part of “MTV First: Battleship,” the A-list cast — featuring Taylor Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna and Brooklyn Decker — premiered a never-before-seen clip Monday night (April 30) from the film.
The exclusive scene opens with an injured Commander Stone Hopper (Skarsgård) looking a little worried as his brother, Lt. Alex Hopper (Kitsch), takes a tiny boat of troops out on the water to get up close and personal with the sea invaders. We have no naval experience and even we know this can’t be a good idea. But the officers prove to be some fearless competition for the machines as Kitsch screams to Rihanna, “Light it up!” And as promised, the Talk That Talk singer gets fierce as she aggressively fires away at the aliens. As one of Stone’s officers reports that “both spy and fire-control radar cannot lock on” to the foreign predators, Stone orders the crew to fire anyway and Alex narrowly avoids a bomb that comes flying at his head. The war zone continues as Stone’s ship keeps trying to fight off incoming missiles. The clip captures the mayhem that is sure to be the Hasbro film adaptation. From what we’ve seen so far, it seems that when Kitsch promised “huge” action when we spoke to him last fall, he meant it. “You don’t know what to expect with ‘Battleship,’ especially when we team up, [director Peter Berg] and I, you’re going to get a lot of laughs, guaranteed,” he said. “And, of course, the action is going to speak for itself. It’s huge.” But this clip — taking place in the middle of the heated battle — does not include any laughs. As Stone attempts to aid his brother’s offensive attacks and remain on the defensive to protect his crew, his ship gets hit and the bomb goes off. What happens next is an intense explosion that knocks the officers away from the bomb, sucks them back in and tosses them away again. Did we mention they’re suspended in the air the whole time as debris and heavy objects fly all around them? Things do not look good for the naval crew right now. Audiences will be able to see if the fleet of ships prevails when “Battleship” hits theaters May 18.
