American Grown The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America
Written by Michelle Obama

Hardcover, 272 pages | Crown | Gardening – Vegetables; Health & Fitness – Nutrition; Health & Fitness – Children’s Health | $30.00 | May 29, 2012 | 978-0-307-95602-6 (0-307-95602-4)

In April 2009, First Lady Michelle Obama planted a kitchen garden on the White House’s South Lawn.  It is a garden with roots in the American past, stretching back to George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, but it is also a garden very much designed for America’s future.  As fresh vegetables, fruit, and herbs sprouted from the ground, this White House Kitchen Garden inspired a new conversation all across the country about the food we feed our families and the impact it has on the health and well-being of our children.

Now, in her first-ever book, American Grown, Mrs. Obama invites you inside the White House Kitchen Garden and shares its inspiring story, from the first planting to the latest harvest.  Hear about her worries as a novice gardener – would the new plants even grow? Learn about her struggles and her joys as lettuce, corn, tomatoes, collards and kale, sweet potatoes and rhubarb flourished in the freshly tilled soil.  Get an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look at every season of the garden’s growth, with striking original photographs that bring its story to life.  Try the unique recipes created by top White House chefs and made with ingredients freshly-picked from the White House garden.  And learn from the White House Garden team about how you can help plant your own backyard, school or community garden.

Mrs. Obama’s journey continues across the nation, sharing the stories of other gardens that have moved and inspired her.  Here are the tales of a modern day vegetable truck that brings fresh produce to underserved communities in Chicago, of Houston office workers who make the sidewalk bloom, of a New York City School that created a scented garden for the visually impaired, of a North Carolina garden that devotes its entire harvest to those less fortunate, and other stories of communities that are transforming the lives and health of their citizens.

With American Grown, Mrs. Obama tells the story of the White House Kitchen Garden, celebrates the bounty of our nation, and reminds us all of what we can grow together.

Gertrude Jekyll
Written by Twigs Way

Trade Paperback, 56 pages | Shire | Biography & Autobiography – Women; Gardening – Garden Design; History – Great Britain | $12.95 | April 17, 2012 | 978-0-7478-1090-2 (0-7478-1090-7)

Almost eighty years after her death, Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) is still one of the most influential of all English garden designers. Best known for her superb use of colour schemes in her hallmark flower borders, she combined an early training in art with self taught horticultural skills. Early influences included William Morris, John Ruskin and William Robinson but it is her partnership with the architect Edwin Lutyens that produced some of the most distinctive of Edwardian houses and gardens. From her house (and nursery) at Munstead Wood, Surrey, Jekyll designed over 400 gardens across Britain and Europe, and some in America – where her archive of designs and drawings is now held.

Alongside her close friend Ellen Willmott she was one of the first women to gain the coveted RHS Victoria Medal. Through her articles and books she became the defining voice of early to mid 20th century garden design, creating a style many gardeners still aspire to today. This book will explore her life, influences on her early work in art and crafts, the transfer to Munstead Wood and working relationship with Edwin Lutyens, as well as her own writings and achievements. Her involvement with early women?s gardening schools, and worker?s movements will also be examined afresh. A final chapter will examine her legacy and recent re-assessments and restorations of her work in England and abroad.

Written by Tim Clarke and Jake Townsend

Hardcover, 224 pages | Clarkson Potter | Architecture – Interior Design; House & Home – Decorating; Architecture – Decoration & Ornament | $50.00 | April 3, 2012 | 978-0-307-71878-5 (0-307-71878-6)

The beach house is more than just a place to live—it is a symbol of a life well lived. —from the Introduction

Coastal homes capture our imagination because they hold the promise of freedom, escape, and pure relaxation. Celebrity decorator Tim Clarke is acclaimed for creating residences that are deep reflections of the people who live in them, as well as of the gorgeous natural environments that surround them.
In these luscious pages, you will be transported to fifteen of the most extraordinary homes inspired by the essence of the coast—every one a unique blend of beauty and comfort. In a style Tim identifies as Scandia surf, white paneling, blue-gray hand-blocked curtains, and timeworn driftwood side tables offer a quiet retreat from the owners’ busy lives. Tim’s native woods aesthetic plays out in a sprawling outdoor living room with a reed ceiling and a Balinese light fixture; lush foliage planted around the perimeter lends an exotic ambience. And in a refined beach classic home, where nothing is too precious for the everyday and where flip-flops are welcome, furniture made from weatherproof fabrics and vintage nautical objects make the rooms feel as timeless as khakis and a white shirt.
Noted photographer Noah Webb captures the warmth and elegance of these seamlessly connected interiors and exteriors. Paired with Tim’s unique insights into sophisticated yet undeniably fresh design, this beautiful volume will inspire you to channel all that you love about the shore into a truly livable modern home.

Mail-Order Homes Sears Homes and Other Kit Houses
Written by Rebecca Hunter

Trade Paperback, 64 pages | Shire | Architecture – History – Modern (late 19th Century to 1945); House & Home; History – United States – State & Local | $9.95 | March 20, 2012 | 978-0-7478-1048-3 (0-7478-1048-6)

At the turn of the last century, the American middle class was expanding rapidly as homesteaders moved west and as trains took travellers across the country, where they established themselves in the depot towns that erupted along train lines. With that growth came the demand for new homes, and from that demand grew a new industry: mail-order homes. Sold by such makers as Sears, Roebuck & Co., Aladdin, and Montgomery Wards, these kit homes were shipped by train, arriving in two boxcars, which then were off-loaded by the purchasers, usually with a team of horse and wagon. In the boxcars was absolutely everything needed to assemble a house, whether it be a vacation cottage, modest bungalow, or two-and-a-half storey home. Literally tens of thousands of these affordable homes were sold in the early 1900s, with most built between 1910-40. In Mail-Order Homes, historical architectural researcher Rebecca Hunter brings to life the history of these charming homes, many of which still stand in communities across the country. From the manufacturers of mail-order homes to the customers who bought and built them, and from the styles and designs to the boom and bust of the industry, Hunter explains the history of these forgotten homes. Filled with illustrations from mail-order home catalogs and contemporary photos, this book tells the story of a bygone era of residential architecture.
